Advanced Materials

In this research domain we apply the design rules of complex molecular systems to the construction of soft materials with interactive features. We follow an integrative  approach, covering the entire chain of knowledge, for the development of polymer materials with built-in dynamics. We construct actuating materials, from coatings to microfluidic devices, and we integrate responsive materials with regulation and computational elements for application in soft robotics.

Interactive Polymer Materials

We develop the next generation of polymer materials that change their properties based on the demands of the users. This leads to both novel applications in actuating materials, devices and biology, and to more effective reuse of polymers.

Molecular devices

In this theme we employ our molecular systems in for example smart coatings, energy materials and microfluidic devices. Here we translate molecular features to macroscopic function.

Soft robotics

Objects that can perform regulated and programmed work are central to this theme. We explore soft robotics from nanomotors to bionic heart supports, with novel computational materials that allow for example neuromorphic computing.
