Engineering Life

We have an increasing molecular understanding of how living systems function. This allows us to engineer molecular solutions to monitor, modulate and restore biological processes. In this research domain we develop highly sensitive diagnostic tools for the detection of bioactive compounds. We create dynamic materials that stimulate cell differentiation and that promote tissue repair. Finally, we integrate chemistry and biology to redirect cellular processes in the fields of cancer and immunology.

Sensing and diagnostics

Diagnostic methods should be fast, selective and sensitive. Here we develop both novel detection methods based on physical principles and protein-engineered solutions to enable point of care analysis.

Regenerative medicine

Tissue regrowth and organoid construction are core aspects of this theme. The combined expertise on mechanical features, materials design and cell biology allows for an engineering approach to this field of science.

Chemical biology

Biological processes are modulated by molecular systems. This involves amongst others the non-covalent regulation of protein-protein interactions, application of nanomedicine in immunology and artificial communication with engineered cells.
