Foundations of Complex Molecular Systems

Molecules attain their function by mutual interactions. Since this interaction landscape is extremely large, we need a multidisciplinary approach to understand how to control this process. In this research domain we combine theory and modelling to get a grip on complexity. We design and create molecules that allow us to build molecular systems with predefined function, and we use advanced characterization tools to determine with unprecedented resolution how molecules interact.

Design and synthesis

We develop and construct molecules with tailor-made features that are able to undergo dynamic interactions. For this purpose we use a wide range of synthetic methods, from organic synthesis to polymer chemistry and protein engineering.

Characterization - foundations

For a thorough understanding of the behavior of molecular systems, we need to analyze them with high spatial and temporal resolution. At ICMS we have state-of-the-art infrastructure and experts that push the boundaries of characterization forward.

Theory and modelling

To get a grip on complexity, the physical and mathematical principles behind molecular interactions should be understood. Within this theme theoreticians and experimentalists work side by side to unravel molecular complexity.
